They lose, and Fiona is tied up. Artie shows up and convinces the villains that just because they are being treated like losers does not mean they must be losers. The villains agree to give up their evil ways. Charming refuses to listen and lunges at Artie with his sword, but Shrek blocks the blow, so Charming attacks him instead.

As Shrek pushes Charming aside, Dragon knocks over Rapunzel's tower, seemingly crushing him to death. Artie is crowned king.

While the kingdom celebrates, Merlin restores Puss and Donkey to their correct bodies. Shrek and Fiona return to the swamp, becoming the parents of ogre triplets, and coping with the help of Puss, Lillian, Donkey and Dragon. Following the success of Shrek 2 , a third and fourth Shrek movie, along with plans for a final, fifth film, were announced in May by Jeffrey Katzenberg: ' Shrek 3 and 4 are going to reveal other unanswered questions and, finally, in the last chapter, we will understand how Shrek came to be in that swamp, when we meet him in the first movie.

The film was developed under the title of Shrek 3. By March , it had been retitled to Shrek the Third. The film was originally going to be released in November ; however, in December , the date was changed to May ; 'The sheer magnitude of the Shrek franchise has led us to conclude that a May release date, with a DVD release around the holiday season, will enable us to best maximize performance and increase profitability, thereby generating enhanced asset value and better returns for our shareholders.

The site's critical consensus reads, ' Shrek the Third has pop culture potshots galore, but at the expense of the heart, charm, and wit that made the first two Shreks classics. David Ansen of Newsweek wrote that the film's 'slightly snarky wit is aimed almost entirely at parents It's a movie at war with itself: a kiddie movie that doesn't really want to be one. Little did Shrek and Fiona know that their marriage had foiled all of her father's plans for her future and his own. Now the King must enlist the help of a powerful Fairy Godmother, the handsome Prince Charming and that famed ogre killer 'Puss In Boots' to put right his version of happily ever after. When his father-in-law suddenly croaks, Shrek is left with the duty and responsibilities of running Far Far Away as the new king.

But Shrek doesn't feel like he is the right guy for the job. The only solution is having someone else take the throne. So Shrek, along with Donkey and Puss in Boots, goes on a search for a rebellious Arthur who is the only remaining heir aside from Shrek himself. Little does he know is that his old enemy, the ruthless Prince Charming, is plotting to take over the kingdom with an army of fairy-tale villains at his command.

Only Fiona and a posse of princesses are left to defend the kingdom from Charming's wrath. A domesticated Shrek hatches a plan to recapture his mojo and discovers what life in Far Far Away land would have been like had he never existed in this final chapter of the popular animated film series.

Maintaining your fierce public persona is no simple task when you're juggling infants and changing diapers, so when Shrek realises that nobody is afraid of him anymore he recruits mischief-maker Rumpelstiltskin to restore his once-mighty roar.

Unfortunately for Shrek, that plan hits an unexpected hitch. As a result, the morose monster takes a trip into an alternate-universe Far Far Away land where there is no Shrek, and Rumpelstiltskin reigns. There, Donkey spends his days hauling carts, and a portly Puss in Boots prefers lounging to swashbuckling.

Perhaps with a little extra effort, Shrek will be able to regain his status as top ogre in town and still have his happily ever after, too.
